What Does Oud Smell Like in Perfume?

Oud can combine deep wood, smoke, resin, leather, earth and warm sweetness in one note. Stronger natural styles may have animalic or medicinal edges, while modern oud accords are often cleaner and easier to wear. The surrounding notes can also change its character, making it feel floral beside rose or warmer beside amber and spices.

Natural oud comes from agarwood, a resinous material that develops inside certain Aquilaria and Gyrinops trees after the wood is damaged or affected by biological activity. The resin rich wood can be distilled to produce oud oil. Because natural agarwood is scarce and internationally regulated, many perfumes use carefully built oud accords or alternative fragrance materials.

Oud is usually used in the base, where it adds power, depth and a long lasting woody character. It blends naturally with rose, saffron, amber, leather, spices, patchouli, sandalwood and musk. A small amount can add darkness, while a stronger amount can become the main feature.
