What Does Myrrh Smell Like in Perfume?

Myrrh in perfume usually smells warm, resinous and balsamic, with smoky, earthy, liquorice-like and softly sweet sides. Some myrrh materials feel dark and medicinal, while others are smoother, warmer and more ambery. Its scent can suggest dried tree resin, incense smoke, warm spice and polished wood. Myrrh is generally used in the heart or deeper layers of amber, incense and woody fragrances.

What Does Myrrh Smell Like?

Myrrh has a rich resinous character that balances dry bitterness with gentle sweetness. It can smell smoky, leathery, earthy or slightly medicinal, with touches of liquorice and warm amber. IFF describes its refined myrrh resinoid as sweet, warm and balsamic, with amber, liquorice and resinous qualities.

Where Does Myrrh Come From?

Natural myrrh is the gum-resin released by trees in the Commiphora genus, especially Commiphora myrrha. The species is native from eastern and south-eastern Ethiopia through northern Kenya and parts of the southern Arabian Peninsula. Cuts or natural breaks in the bark allow the resin to flow out and harden. It can then be processed with alcohol to produce a perfumery resinoid.
