What Does Peru Balsam Smell Like in Perfume?

Peru balsam in perfume usually smells sweet, balsamic and warm, with vanilla, cinnamon, amber and powdery sides. It has a smooth resinous character that can resemble dark vanilla, soft caramel and warm spice. Peru balsam is mainly used in the base because it adds richness and lasting warmth.

What Does Peru Balsam Smell Like?

IFF describes Peru balsam oil as an opulent sweet and powdery balsamic material with vanilla, cinnamon and amber undertones. It feels softer and sweeter than many smoky resins, although it can still add dark depth to a fragrance.

Where Does Peru Balsam Come From?

Peru balsam comes from the balsam of Myroxylon balsamum. Despite its name, an important perfume supply comes from El Salvador. IFF’s FairWild-certified material is molecularly distilled from the balsam and contains materials including benzyl benzoate, benzyl cinnamate and vanillin.

How Is Peru Balsam Used in Perfume?

Peru balsam is used in amber, gourmand, vanilla, leather, tobacco and woody fragrances. It blends well with vanilla, benzoin, cinnamon, cacao, tobacco, patchouli, sandalwood and labdanum. It adds warmth, smooths harsh woods and can strengthen a sweet resinous base.
