What Does Benzoin Smell Like in Perfume?

Benzoin has a soft sweetness that can remind people of vanilla or caramel, but it also has a deeper resinous and balsamic character. Siam benzoin is often especially sweet, powdery and vanilla-like, while Sumatra benzoin may have warmer cereal and cinnamon-like facets. Neither type smells exactly like plain vanilla because both contain woody and resinous depth. This balance makes benzoin useful in perfumes that need sweetness without becoming thin or overly sugary.

Benzoin resin is collected from trees in the Styrax family. Siam benzoin mainly comes from Styrax tonkinensis, while Sumatra benzoin comes from Styrax benzoin. Cuts are made in the bark so that resin flows out and hardens after contact with the air. The dried gum-resin is then extracted, often with alcohol, to produce the benzoin resinoid used by perfumers.

Benzoin is normally used in the base of amber, gourmand, floral, woody, tobacco and incense fragrances. It blends particularly well with vanilla, labdanum, rose, iris, sandalwood, spices, tobacco and musk. Its creamy sweetness can soften smoky or woody ingredients, while its resinous side gives light vanilla accords more depth. It also helps the dry-down feel warmer, smoother and more connected.
