What Is the Spicy Fragrance Accord?

A spicy accord can smell warm and sweet, dry and peppery, fresh and aromatic, or earthy and leathery. Cinnamon and nutmeg generally push the accord towards warmth, cardamom can introduce a fresher aromatic quality, and ginger can add brightness. Pink and Sichuan pepper can create a sparkling, lively effect, while saffron often brings dry, leathery warmth. Spicy accords therefore cover a much wider range than one generic spice smell.

What Does the Spicy Accord Smell Like?

The balance between warm and fresh spices often determines how a Spicy accord feels. Cinnamon can be warm, sweet and intense, whereas green cardamom has a fresher, almost cooling aromatic quality. Ginger can add a sharper lift, while pepper materials create dryness and sparkle rather than obvious sweetness. Cumin can take the accord in a warmer, earthier direction.

Saffron adds another dimension because its perfume character can be bittersweet, earthy, hay-like and leathery. Combining these different effects allows a perfumer to create a spice accord that feels bright and energetic or dark and warming. A Spicy accord is also different from Luxaro's Spicy fragrance-note category, which groups individual spice notes, and from the Spicy & Woody fragrance family, which describes the overall style of a finished perfume.
