What Does Sage Smell Like in Perfume?

Sage in perfume usually smells dry, herbal and aromatic, with camphoraceous, eucalyptus-like, earthy and lightly woody sides. It is generally sharper and more medicinal than clary sage, which has a softer floral and amber character. Some sage notes feel cool and green, while others are warmer, drier and more rugged. Sage is normally used in the heart or base.

What Does Sage Smell Like?

Common sage has a powerful herbal smell shaped by compounds including thujone, camphor and 1,8-cineole. These materials can create dry, cooling, eucalyptus-like and medicinal qualities. Research shows that the composition of sage oil varies between plants and growing conditions, so one oil may be greener while another feels more camphoraceous or woody.

Where Does Sage Come From?

Common sage is Salvia officinalis, native from south-western Germany through southern Europe. Essential oil can be produced from its leaves and other aerial parts through steam or hydro-distillation. This entry is separate from clary sage, which comes from Salvia sclarea and has a different scent profile.
