What Does Geranium Smell Like in Perfume?

Geranium in perfume usually smells rosy, green and aromatic, with minty, leafy, herbal and lightly fruity sides. It resembles rose but generally feels sharper, fresher and more strongly green. Some geranium oils are crisp and plant-like, while others are smoother and more floral. Geranium is normally used in the heart to connect fresh top notes with floral, woody or aromatic materials.

What Does Geranium Smell Like?

Geranium oil combines rose-like floral qualities with crushed leaves and cool mint. It may also have citrus, spice or red-fruit nuances. IFF describes Egyptian geranium oil as having rose facets, green herbaceous and minty top notes with a touch of fruitiness. Madagascan oil is similarly floral and rosy but includes leafy freshness, slight sweetness, fruit and spice.

Where Does Geranium Come From?

The material called geranium oil in perfumery usually comes from scented Pelargonium plants rather than true plants in the botanical genus Geranium. Pelargonium graveolens is native from eastern Zimbabwe to South Africa. Commercial geranium oils are often produced from cultivated hybrids. The stems and leaves are hydro-distilled to collect their essential oil.
