What Is the Smoky Fragrance Accord?

A smoky accord can smell like dry wood smoke, glowing embers, incense, burnt leaves, tobacco or lightly charred materials. Some versions are dark and tar-like, while others are softer, sweeter or more resinous. Leather can give smoke a dry, textured quality, while balsams and rum-like effects can make it warmer and rounder. The accord can therefore suggest everything from a faint smoky haze to a much darker burned-wood impression.

What Does the Smoky Accord Smell Like?

Different materials create very different kinds of smoke. Birch effects can feel dry, leathery and tar-like, while guaiac wood can suggest burning leaves, tobacco or dark wood. Resins such as styrax and Peru balsam can introduce sweeter balsamic warmth, preventing the accord from feeling simply burnt or ashy. Tobacco can add dry leafiness, and leather can strengthen the darker side.

Smoky accords also respond strongly to surrounding notes. Vanilla or gourmand materials can create the impression of toasted sweetness, woods can make the smoke feel more natural and dry, and resins can turn it towards incense. This is why smokiness can appear in very different perfumes without every one smelling like a bonfire.
