What Does Hay Smell Like in Perfume?

Hay in perfume usually smells dry, warm and softly sweet, with grassy, tobacco-like, honeyed and dried-fruit sides. It suggests sun-dried grass rather than freshly cut green lawn. Some hay notes feel dusty and rustic, while others are smooth, warm and almost vanilla-like. Hay is mainly used in the base.

What Does Hay Smell Like?

Hay has a dry herbal character with warm sweetness. It can include tobacco, honey, coumarin, dried fruit and soft earth. IFF describes hay absolute as sweet and herbal, with warm tobacco and a honeyed dried-fruit background.

Where Does Hay Come From?

Natural hay absolute can be made by solvent-extracting dried plant material and then purifying the extract with alcohol. Hay effects can also be constructed with coumarin-rich, herbal, tobacco-like and honeyed fragrance materials. The result can range from realistic dried grass to a smoother warm accord.
