Fragrance note guide
Blackberry in perfume usually smells dark, juicy and tart, with sweet, green, wine-like and softly woody sides. It is generally deeper and less sharp than blackcurrant. Some blackberry accords suggest fresh berries and crushed leaves, while others are darker, jam-like or musky. In a richer composition, blackberry can remain noticeable into the base.

Blackberry aroma is complex rather than being created by one defining molecule. Research has identified fruity esters, green aldehydes, floral materials and furanones among the compounds contributing to different blackberry varieties. The balance can create fresh, ripe, green, floral, earthy or cooked-fruit effects.
Blackberries belong to the Rubus group, with Rubus fruticosus commonly used as a broad botanical name for European blackberry plants. In perfume, blackberry is normally recreated from berry, fruity, green, floral and musky fragrance materials rather than extracted directly from ordinary fresh fruit.
Blackberry is used in fruity, floral, woody, amber and gourmand fragrances. It blends well with blackcurrant, plum, rose, violet, orchid, vanilla, patchouli, musk and woods. It can give a floral perfume a darker fruit tone or become richer and more velvety beside amber, vanilla and musk.
