What Does Rhubarb Smell Like in Perfume?

Rhubarb in perfume usually smells tart, green and sharply fruity, with watery, vegetal and slightly sour sides. It can suggest freshly cut pink stalks rather than a sweet cooked dessert. Some rhubarb accords are crisp and almost citrusy, while others feel darker, earthier or more jam-like. Rhubarb can be used near the top or in deeper parts of a fruity composition.

What Does Rhubarb Smell Like?

Fresh rhubarb has a striking green and sour character. Studies of uncooked stalks found that C6 aldehydes, alcohols and acids make important contributions to its aroma. These materials help explain the impression of snapped green stems, sharp fruit and watery vegetation.

Where Does Rhubarb Come From?

Cultivated rhubarb is associated with Rheum rhabarbarum, a species native from southern Siberia to northern and central China. In perfume, rhubarb is normally recreated as an accord using tart fruity, green, watery and sometimes earthy fragrance materials. Direct extraction from ordinary rhubarb stalks is not a standard source for the perfume note.
