What Does Magnolia Smell Like in Perfume?

Magnolia in perfume usually smells fresh, floral and softly creamy, with green, fruity, citrus-like and lightly spicy sides. It is often more transparent than tuberose and less indolic than jasmine. Some magnolia notes are bright and lemony, while others feel smooth, warm and petal-like. Magnolia can be used in the top or heart of a fragrance.

What Does Magnolia Smell Like?

Magnolia is a broad perfume note because different species and materials have different scent profiles. Natural magnolia flower oil produced from Michelia alba has been described by IFF as a complex floral note with pronounced fruit, green nuances and a touch of spice. Magnolia accords may also include fresh muguet, citrus, creamy floral and watery elements.

Where Does Magnolia Come From?

Magnolia notes can be based on natural flower oil, headspace studies or constructed accords. IFF produces a natural magnolia flower essential oil in China by hydro-distilling the flowers of Michelia alba. Other magnolia species include Magnolia grandiflora, a tree native to the south-eastern United States and Texas. Because the name covers several species and interpretations, perfumers may combine natural and synthetic materials to achieve a consistent magnolia effect.
