What Does Mahogany Smell Like in Perfume?

Mahogany in perfume usually smells dark, warm and woody, with polished, dry, slightly smoky and ambery sides. It is not normally an oil extracted from furniture timber. Instead, it is a constructed woody accord designed to suggest dense reddish wood, smooth grain and a warm polished surface. Mahogany is mainly used in the base.

What Does Mahogany Smell Like?

A mahogany accord may combine dry wood, cedar, amber, gentle smoke and a slightly sweet polished effect. Some versions feel smooth and refined, while others are darker, earthier or more leathery. The name describes an artistic woody impression rather than one standard perfume ingredient.

Where Does Mahogany Come From?

True West Indian mahogany is Swietenia mahagoni, a tropical tree native from southern Florida through parts of the Caribbean. Modern perfumers normally construct mahogany notes with woody and amber molecules rather than treating mahogany timber as a standard fragrance extract. Materials such as warm precious-wood and smooth woody-amber molecules can help create this effect.
