Pomegranate aroma varies between cultivars and can combine green fruit, citrus-like terpenes, fresh juice and faint woody qualities. Research identified aldehydes, alcohols, monoterpenes and other materials in pomegranate aroma, confirming that its smell is more complex than simple sweetness.

Pomegranate fruit comes from Punica granatum, native from parts of western and Central Asia. Modern perfume notes are generally constructed from fruity, green and tart fragrance molecules because pomegranate juice does not provide a commonly used stable perfume oil.

Pomegranate is used in fruity, floral, aquatic, musky and woody fragrances. It blends well with citrus, raspberry, blackcurrant, rose, lotus, marine notes, musk and pale woods. It can add tartness to sweet fruit or create a bright contrast against soft flowers.
