IFF’s Grisalva is softer, creamy and velvety, while Cetalor has a powerful amber-woody character.

Natural ambergris is a rare substance formed in the digestive system of sperm whales, apparently around indigestible material such as squid beaks. Modern perfumery can reproduce its scent with molecules made through chemical synthesis or biotechnology. Ambrofix, for example, can be produced through a biotechnology process beginning with sugar cane, while IFF identifies Grisalva and Cetalor as suitable for vegan formulations.

Ambergris-style materials are used in amber, woody, marine, musky, tobacco and citrus fragrances. They blend well with bergamot, saffron, cedarwood, sandalwood, tobacco, musk, salt and aromatic notes. They can improve diffusion, smooth the transition between layers and create a warm mineral effect without using animal-derived ambergris.
