What Does Petitgrain Smell Like in Perfume?

Petitgrain in perfume usually smells green, citrusy and aromatic, with leafy, woody, floral and slightly bitter sides. It is less juicy than orange peel and greener than neroli. Petitgrain combines the freshness of citrus leaves with dry twigs and a faint orange-blossom character. It is mainly used as a top note.

What Does Petitgrain Smell Like?

Petitgrain has a crisp green-citrus scent with crushed leaves, bitter peel, herbs and soft wood. It may also carry a light floral side that connects it naturally with neroli and orange blossom. The Paraguayan material is especially associated with aromatic green freshness.

Where Does Petitgrain Come From?

Petitgrain is traditionally produced by steam-distilling the leaves and young twigs of bitter orange, Citrus × aurantium. The name refers historically to the small unripe fruits once included in the distillation. DSM-Firmenich confirms that modern petitgrain Paraguay oil is extracted from twigs and leaves.
